I always feed my uros lettuce. I feed other things too, but always lettuce. They live on millet seed, so they have stuff to munch on, even when they don't have food. I feed my uros everyday, and with great variety. I feed Mazuri tortoise diet whole and soaked about three times a week. They have thawed frozen peas once, or twice a week. Over the summer they will get weeds grown in the backyard and flowers. Our mali uro thinks that flowers of any sort are to die for. He loved dandelion (so don't kill them if you have a uro!) pansy, petunia, and especially hibiscus. I feed my uros squash and carrot when we have it. Remember, it's fine to feed just lettuce sometimes in their week. They enjoy lettuce, and never mind having a plain feed day. I sprinkle with Miner-all. Repashy, and calcium almost everyday. I try to mix it up a bit, repashy one day, calcium the next, but it doesn't really matter.

Well, I think I've covered everything I feed, and hopefully some future members will find this helpful!

We feed ours daily a bowlful of some pre-mixed Salad (usually Spring mix or baby romaine mix). We also keep a bowlful of millet seed and ground-up 15-bean soup mix 24/7 for them to nibble on. A few times a week, I offer them Exo Terra tortoise diet (I get it for free where I work). And I always sprinkle some T-Rex Tortoise supplement on everything.

And absolutely NO crickets!

That sounds like a great feed for your lizards! Same here, we have crickets, but we never feed the uros crickets, (though I hear they enjoy them.) Our lizards will probably never taste a cricket in their lifetimes here.

I've actually mostly refrained from lettuce -- the nutritional content is very poor. Mine eat a wide variety of fruits and veggies, with added lentils, iguana pellets and calcium as toppings rotated on every day of the week. I have one or two fruits mixed in with the salad bowls every day (keep in mind that I"m also feeding two iguanas and two beardies, so while it may seem like a lot of fruit for for uros, it's really not when it's added in with everything else...)

The things I buy most seem to be:

-kale
-chard
-parsley
-romaine lettuce (only small amounts are used)
-apples
-pear
-beets (for the greens)
-carrots
-yams
-different squash varieties
-snap peas
-endive

They all live on millet seed, and have done well with it. I buy other various things when they're available, but the above items are my staples.

Yes, when I say lettuce, I mean endive, escarole, romaine, and greenleaf. They have a variety. Sounds like you're doing great with that nutrition, and I haven't read anything that says some fruit is harmful. I think the reason some people don't is they figure fruit doesn't grow in the desert where they're from, and that they might not be used to it. However, since you're not here with a distress call of sick uros, it can't be harmful for your lizards. :D :D :D

Hahaha. Sorry. I hear "lettuce" and I think "iceberg". :D

Fruit is high in sugars (albeit natural sugars) and can tend to be fattening. Anything too high in sugar is harmful if fed in excess.... my hips can attest to that!!

I thought that might be it. :D Sometimes words only remind us of a certain thing, and we forget there's more to the thing than just what we thought about. :D

I've never actually heard the other things referred to as lettuce -- just as "greens". I blame you crazy foreigners!! :p

I don't have my uros here yet, but I plan to feed lots of organic vegetables, weeds, and plants that I am growing. The sonoran desert also offers a lot of highly nutritious plants that I will be able to offer my uros.

I DO NOT plan to keep my uromastyx completely on seeds. I have my reasons...........

Can you explain them? There's always debate on the substrate issue.... this is one that has worked well for me, and any other uros I have seen in person tend to look rough, so if it works, I stick with it until something better comes up. And if there's something I don't know about, then hey! Time for a change!
