Our chucks and uros cannot get enough (if you ask them) dandelion this time of year. We have seen no ill effects of feeding them daily. Anyone have other experiences that would lead us to wanting to use more restraint with dandelions? Hmmm....I remember the days when our yard was so well groomed and not a dandelion in sight...now I look out and see a field of yellow....and smile :D .

Chucks LOVE dandelions! All of the chucks I've kept were ferocious for 'um. They are great for putting weight on a skinny chucks/uros too. I don't think dandelions are bad if fed often but as always a varied diet full of many nutritious items is better than a small number of items feds exclusively.

Mine love them as well. I do seem to get looked at differently as I pick the dandelions off of the boulevards. Is there something wrong with a grown man picking 50-100 dandelions at a time? They are hard to find now, but there should be a second wave soon. My chucks are fussier - the more flower the better - the Uros just inhale them anyway they can get them. I try not to feed them the stem, but my female (Mali) seems to like them, the male Uro and both chucks neatly cut the stem (if there is one) and move to the next flower.

LoveMySauromalus - I read that. I think Tom was talking about hatchlings.

lol wow thats a lot of flowers!

yeh i get some really funny looks. outside the nursary school across the road from me there is loads on he green on the pavement (sidewalk) and one morning when i was picking dandelions and leaves a child stopped next to me and called to his mother, mum.....why is this lady picking those flowers?
i was about to explain when the woman took her son and walked him away with strange half smile and concern in her eyes. i dont think people realise that dandelions are edible, for us as well as many different animals. my rabbits love them too!
she must have thought i got loose from the near by psych hospital!

i feed my hatchlings maybe 10 dandelion flowers a week and i mix them up in the other greens to encourage them not to just eat the flowers lol.

i dont think my landllord will be very happy to see how ive let my little patch of garden be taken over by weeds lol.

have you fed nasturtium? im getting some seeds tomorrow to plant and will search for some mature plants too. the plant is supposed to be great for their immune systems.

im also going to try growing some succulents, so wish me luck! lol

brilliant pictures by the way. i cant wait until ive got the female settled in quarentine and have the time to take loads of photographs of the boys.

do you handle your reptiles?

Hi LoveMySauromalus -
I handle my female chuck a little, the smaller, younger male does not like me...yet. I was advised to let them settle in and go slow. I was told it may take a year for mine to settle down, but they are WC - you probably will not have to wait anywhere near that long.

I have not tried nasturtium, but every care sheet on the web says its good stuff. I might copy you and order some seeds.

Good luck with the succulents.

tom

Yes I was talking about hatchlings with the dandelion impactions.

Yes Nasturtiums are a great food source and they love them.

LMS. Never tried bee pollen but I have heard really good stuff about it. A lot of the uro people use it. Yes chucks can eat seeds-you asked me somewhere in the forum but limited. I know Kamiel feeds seeds. I do not. I have had animals start to eat only the seeds and ignore the rest of the food. Lost a nice female this way. Her whole gut was plugged with seeds.
