Hi everyone!

I recently had someone local who needed to rehome their juvenile female ornate uromastyx. I currently have a 1.1 pair that I plan to breed next spring. This new girl is a good 2+ years away from breeding but I just wondered if anyone had success breeding one male to two females?

I know breeding females are very territorial so I suspect I won't be able to keep them in the same setup, but knowing that females can reject strange males, what would be the best course of action? Should I set the female up in a new tank and introduce the male to her that way, or will the separation from my current pair cause them to not be compatible later on? Do I need to get another male if I want to breed her?

Thanks for any advice. :)

Boy those are some hard questions. Ornates can be a real pain in the butt to pair. I highly doubt 2 females will get along together. If it were me, I would set the new one up separate. Keep her that way and introduce the male for short periods when you want them to breed. Good luck and congrats on the new addition.

Hi I can give you a little insight in my situation.....

I keep a trio of Ornates together all year round, Must admit that I had them together since they were young. Both females have layed eggs for me thee past 2 years. I only seperate the female after she laid her eggs, so she can get back in shape and she wont defend her eggs towards the other ornate female, as most of the time these females will lay there eggs within weeks fro m eachother. Than after the second female laid her eggs I wait another month so both females are bakc to normal and not to defensive and I put the first female back in with the pair.

The male does have to cope with sometimes moody females during this period after egglaying, but he thats live :)

If it was me I would just try to introduce her just after the cooling down period (when she is old enough to be bred) and see how all 3 will get along. If everything goes fine and there is no agression other than the breeding agression of the male, I would keep them as a trio. But always have a spare cage just in case..... And make sure you spend a lot of time observing them....

Oh and dont forget to quarantaine .....

Thanks everyone! I know it's kind of a tricky situation. The new female has been in quarantine 3 weeks and I am thinking about introducing her in the next few weeks. It's a 175 gallon 5' tank so I'm hoping there will be enough space for everyone...

I have extra tanks as necessary so I will try the trio and see how it goes.
