I just joined and am reaching out in desperation. I have had an Ebony for going on 3 years, he will be 9 this year. He is my classroom pet. I got a juvy Red Nigerian this past October as a companion. The two of them have gotten along very well since being gradually introduced, and there has been no aggression from "Froot."

Everything has been going very well until late January, when my husband noticed "Pumpkin" not eating his fair share. We didn't think a whole lot about it until 2 and a half weeks ago when Pumpkin began looking a bit thinner. Since then, I have been 'soaking' Pumpkin every other evening in lukewarm water and he has been drinking quite a bit each time. He has also lost his appetite, no matter what I have put in on their regular organic menu. As of now, Pumpkin is not drinking like he was. I attempted to feed him a tuberculin syringe of organic spinach baby food tonight, but he clamped shut tight.

Being a pre k teacher, I am financially strapped and sadly cannot afford to take him to the herp vet, much less the vet school. It is distressing me that he has gotten so bad so quickly and we can't figure out what went wrong. Does anyone have any suggestion? We don't want to lose him, but I'm afraid we may be too late.

Hi and welcome. I wish I had the miracle answer or even anything positive. In my experience it is nearly impossible if not impossible to turn them around once they decide they are done eating. Keep trying everything you are doing. I have had very little luck force feeding. I wish you the best of luck. It always amazes me how quickly they can decide they are done eating. Why would an animal simply starve themselves to death. Something I have seen Uros do that I will never understand!

A few things jumped out at me here.
-Spinach is not a good food item to be feeding, be it in baby food or any other form.
-Water should not be offered--uromastyx will attain all the water they need from their greens and other food items.
-You should only soak a uromastyx as a last ditch effort and never under any other circumstance--this can cause a lot of health issues if done improperly.
-By force feeding you are putting the animal through high stress levels, which only hinders appetite.

IMO you should separate them ASAP. While you may not see signs or notice any aggression there very well could be--aggression between animals is projected in many ways, including posturing and vocal warning, which are both easily overlooked. Once you have them separated allow the Saharan to acclimate, avoiding any unnecessary handling. You can try providing brightly colored food items like dandelion flowers, shredded yellow pepper, radicchio or any other edible flowers (make sure they were not exposed to pesticides and avoid flowers from flower shops). In the meantime, can you provide me with more specific information in regards to husbandry? For instance:
-Enclosure (type, dimensions, substrate, shelter/hide info etc etc)
-Lighting (type, manufacturer, wattage distance from the reptile)
-Heating (how you are heating, basking temps, warm side temps, cool side temps, how you obtained these temps)
-Diet (specific food items, how often they are fed)

It would help if you could post a few images of the uromastyx and of the enclosure and lighting setup as well. Until then, please visit UroWiki and read up on every topic--getting your husbandry correct is absolutely crucial.
