Hi. I haven't tried feeding my chuck the cactus as I just got him on May 26. The cactus is blooming right now and I read up on it from the internet. I guess the pads and fruits are consumed by humans as well. I think there are some olds fruits on it from last year which contain seeds. I remember there were some seedlings that came up one year but I don't think they survived. They could be sprouted indoors however and allowed to grow on a window sill until they were big enough to transplant outdoors. The plants spread naturally outdoors so given the room you can have your very own "cactus patch". Thinking about the plants I think they have been growing here closer to 20 years rather than 12. Time really flies as you get older. LOL!!!

You cannot feed almost all species of opuntia because of the glocids(spelling). They are little hair like spines that stick in everything. I think the only one safe to feed is Opuntia indicus. You can feed the others but they must be peeled or shaved. You grate them up like carrots.

Lucky for me they grow within walking distance. Looks like I'll have a free supply of Opuntia!
