Those are some really cool pix. I love the one with that lizard in between two rocks. It's amazing where a little lizard can hide! So, how do you tell a male from a female? Just pores?

Thanks! Most of the times....males are a lot more colorful and larger. I'd say the majority of chuckwallas I see are males. The females tend to hide more and get into deeper cracks.

Here are a few pics of some more carrot tails I saw. We saw around 25-30 of them today.....not too bad eh?

Took a bit but I found him! :D That was a hard one though, very cool photo Norman. For those that don't know you can zoom in a bit by clicking the twirling magnifying glass in the upper left corner of the photo. Click it once, then click it once again to zoom more. Even zoomed all the way in he was still hard to find!

The rest of your photos are GREAT by the way.

Thanks Greg!

I hope you still plan on going on the desert tortoise survey. People who have been going have found lots of gila monsters, black tails, tiger rattlers, and desert tortoises. They found around 10 gila monsters the last few surveys....and these were ACTIVE gila monsters roaming around. May is gila monster month!

Oh, Norman you are so lucky! We don't have any herps up here. I suppose there are some salamanders, but no lizards. That carrot was hard to find, Norman. Thanks on the magnifying tip, Greg, that was the only way I could have found him. :D

Hi. I like the surveillance posture that chucks exhibit. My chuck commonly does this in his enclosure. Great photos by the way. You are so lucky to have the opportunity to observe and photograph these guys. It is really too bad there isn't a more active breeding program in the hobby for Chuckwallas. I have recently seen ads from a few sources for wild caught chucks available for sale. Makes me worried for future populations in the wild. From what I understand they only lay one clutch a year?

I have seen them peeking at me on Black Mtn. Never got too close, just watched them with binoculars. It has been about 10 years, though, so my memory is a bit fuzzy. I thought they were darkish red backs, kind of speckled.
I would love to see some pictures, though, to refresh my memory. Black Mtn is a very cool place. Interesting to see, it is so barren, almost an alien landscape.
