Hi everyone,
I'm so pleased to find this list and excited to communicate with other uro owners.
I'm fairly new to the uros. I've always considered myself a "tortoise person", in the past, lizards haven't really appealed to me. That was beFORE I met my first uro though.
I love their chubby little bodies, deliberate movements, interesting habits and prehistoric appearance. Also, the fact that their diets are so similar to the tortoises. It's a plus (for me) that I don't have to worry about buying insects on a regular basis.
My first uro was a baby Saharan, only 4 in. (including tail) long at time of purchase. This little one is a bit frustrating because he/she just doesn't seem very food motivated. I was told at time of purchase that it was a year old, but don't know if that's accurate. I'm reassurred a bit by the fact that she's had a couple of good sheds since purchase in March and has grown an inch or two, but I'd be happier if she was more robust.
My 2nd uro, purchased about a month later is also a Saharan, about 8 in. long and a MUCH more satisfying eater. I'm pretty sure he's a "he", but wouldn't bet money on it.
About 2 mos. ago, I responded to an ad depicting uros for sale at a great price, but kept in deplorable conditions. I do have concerns about one in
particular but will address them in the Mali section. I'm not certain I will keep these two, but couldn't leave them in the situation they were in.
All 4 of my uros have great temperaments. I don't handle them a lot, but they've never made any effort at all to bite or tail whip. I know my first two are c.b's and suspect perhaps the two rescued mali's are as well so I'm sure that makes a difference.
They may struggle a bit when they want to be released, but that's about as far as it goes. I'd wondered if a sweet disposition was just part of the uro "thing", but I'm seeing in other posts that this is not always the case. I guess this makes a stronger argument for acquiring captive bred uros.
Last but not least, I have recently become aware of baby Egyption uros for sale. I've always admired the Egyptions but have never seen them available so wasn't ever expecting the opportunity to arise. I'm still not sure I can justify spending the asking price, and I'm a bit concerned about the fact that these are basically hatchlings, but I am "mulling" the idea.
In the meantime I plan to research the species as much as possible so would love any feedback from Egyption owners.
