Hi everyone! This is my first post! I got a Nigerian Uromastyx yesterday, don't know much about them yet but I'm learning! so far it's the coolest little animal! I just had a question about the basking spot. I've read that they like it 120-140 degrees under the basking light. Is that true? Just seems a little high...I think i can fry eggs at that temp...

Welcome!

Uros like it hot!

One thing I do, is stack levels under the basking lamp. The top level would be hottest, 2nd level 10 degrees cooler, 3rd level 5 degrees cooler than the 2nd, etc. etc.

Chuckwallas in AZ will bask in some high temps.....temps get to 120 but those rocks are like 150. Uromastyx live in a harsher environment

Ok! Just wanted to make sure that was accurate! Also I've noticed since I've had him that he routinely rubs his head on the edges on the enclosure, is this normal? If so what is he doing?

Check out my set-up here: http://www.uromastyx.org/our-set-up-t26.html

Also, even they're often sold as Nigerians, this species really doesn't come from Niger. That's just where they're imported from. I prefer to call them Saharans, but I'm just anal-retentive about stuff like that. :)

Remember, no insects and plenty of hides.

Welcome to the forum. Check out Troy's care sheet and information here... uromastyx-care-sheet-t52.html. If you follow that, you won't go wrong.

No isects at all , they suffer liver damage if they eat insects in the long run.
