i purchased my yellow Saharan/Nigerian uromastyx from a vendor in Florida. I believe he was originally wild caught. i seen videos of him and he was used to being handles and was doing very well.
Now that i have him after being shipped from FL to NY he is terrified of me. its been about two weeks and all i do is supply food and remove droppings. every time i get close he retreats to his hide immediately. he east everything i give him. I have him in a plywood enclosure with acrylic doors it measures 3x2x2. (couldn't do 4 feet this time around hopefully when i move i can get my reptile room going)

i am aware his acclimation could take weeks to months. should i cover his cage? it is located in my living room and every time he sees me get up from the chair he is startled. are there any tips i could try to help along with the process

Is he eating? It is normal for Uros to be skittish, especially in the beginning. We bought a CB Mali several years back and it took him a while to warm up to being handled. Now he will come to the front and climb on your hand. We have Ornates that will NEVER allow this. The Sudanese we have still run and hide any time you get near their enclosure. Our Saharans are getting better about not running, but they still do at times and we have had them for 6 months or so. Just offer him plenty of hides and food. In time, he will come around. Saharans are usually pretty good natured.

Yes we picked up a female juvenile yellow saharran on the 31st. Been with us about two days now. She is about 8 months old. She didn't eat today but we did tke the one hide out for awhile to promote her eating. She did eat yesterday when we did this. We had the hide out for about an three hours or so and then put it back in the cage. She stayed out for awhile and was moving around. Today she let us pet here and wasn't scuttling away when we put stuff in food dish to tempt her. Scuttled when touch her tail or legs. But is only active from about 3 to 5 pm mst. I'm concerned that she did'nt eat. Noted she ate some of the crushed walnut substrate we currently use yesterday.

When I got my Uros I had the cage completely covered for a month. They are wild caught and after having them since the summer they are still very skitish. They used to run at the very sight of me but now they will bask infront me and let me put my hand somewhat in the cage. I'm sure it will take quite some time for them to calm down and let me actually touch them.
